Discovering Passion and Purpose: Brittnee Mexico’s Journey from Athlete to Educator

In the latest episode of our podcast, we had the pleasure of speaking with Brittnee Mexico, whose journey from a small-town athlete to a dedicated educator and coach is both inspiring and enlightening. With a unique name and an even more unique path, Brittnee’s story is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and adaptability.

Early Life and Athletic Beginnings

Brittnee grew up in the "mean streets" of Herkimer, a place she fondly remembers for its simplicity and the absence of modern distractions like cell phones. Her childhood was marked by outdoor activities, instant messaging on AIM, and a tight-knit community. It was in this environment that Brittnee developed a love for sports, playing softball and soccer during her school years.

College Years and Athletic Pursuits

Post-high school, Brittnee attended Elmira College, initially driven by her mother's suggestion to become a teacher for the practical benefits it offered. However, her primary motivation was to continue playing sports. She excelled in softball and walked onto the soccer team to stay in shape. This dual commitment to education and athletics set the stage for her future endeavors.

Transition to Coaching and Education

After college, Brittnee returned home and faced the challenge of furthering her education without incurring massive debt. She strategically pursued a graduate assistant (GA) position to obtain her master’s degree for free, demonstrating her resourcefulness and determination. Her journey led her to Utica University, where she juggled roles as a student, GA, and coach.

Despite the competitive job market for teachers, Brittnee found her niche in advisement at Utica and later at Herkimer High School, where she started coaching. This period was pivotal as it reinforced her love for coaching and mentoring young athletes.

The MVCC Chapter

In 2017, Brittnee’s career took a significant turn when she became the head coach and student-athlete success coordinator at Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC). This role combined her passion for sports and education, allowing her to impact students' lives both on and off the field.

Challenges and Rewards of Coaching

Coaching at a community college presents unique challenges, such as high turnover and the need to continually build team chemistry. Brittnee excels in this environment by focusing on recruiting players with grit and work ethic—qualities she believes are essential and unteachable at the collegiate level. She emphasizes the importance of developing not just athletes, but well-rounded individuals who can excel in various aspects of life.

Recruiting Philosophy

Brittnee’s recruiting strategy is rooted in practicality and opportunity. She highlights the financial benefits of attending a community college, especially given the rising costs of higher education. Her approach resonates with students and parents alike, who are increasingly aware of the financial implications of a college education. She also underscores the immediate playing opportunities available at MVCC, contrasting it with the often bench-bound early years at four-year institutions.

Building a Legacy

Through her work at MVCC, Brittnee is building more than just a successful softball program; she’s cultivating a culture of excellence and resilience. Her players not only become better athletes but also better individuals, prepared to face the challenges of life beyond college.

Summary

Brittnee's story is a powerful reminder of the impact that dedicated educators and coaches can have on young lives. Her journey from a small-town athlete to a respected coach and educator is a testament to the transformative power of sports and education. As Brittnee continues to shape the lives of her students and athletes, her legacy of passion, perseverance, and practical wisdom will undoubtedly inspire many more to follow in her footsteps.
